Warriors 112, Lakers 95: how Golden State erased a 25-point hole, and what the box score says

Short answer — The Golden State Warriors beat the Los Angeles Lakers 112-95 on Friday night, 30 October 2026, at Chase Center in San Francisco, which was Saturday morning, 31 October, in the Philippines (tip-off 10:00 AM PHT). The Lakers led 38-15 after the first quarter and by as many as 25 points; the Warriors then won the second quarter by the same 38-15 score, were level at 53-53 at half-time and pulled away. Stephen Curry scored 31 points with eight three-pointers. Luka Doncic scored 37 for Los Angeles. It was an NBA Cup game, and the result also went against the pre-game betting line, which had the Lakers as favourites.
Below we set out the verified facts, the numbers that explain the swing, and a plain-language note on how the posted line compared with what happened. Everything is sourced to the AP game story and the ESPN box score; the ratios and peso examples are our calculation.
What happened, quarter by quarter?
According to the Associated Press game story published by CBS Los Angeles on 30 October 2026, Doncic had 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting with five three-pointers in the first quarter alone, and the Lakers "raced ahead 38-15". The Warriors then outscored them 38-15 in the second. AP adds that this made Golden State the first team in the shot-clock era, playoffs included, to trail by 23 or more after one quarter and be tied or better at half-time.

| Period | Lakers | Warriors | Running score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st quarter | 38 | 15 | LAL 38-15 |
| 2nd quarter | 15 | 38 | 53-53 |
| 3rd quarter | 27 | 32 | GSW 85-80 |
| 4th quarter | 15 | 27 | GSW 112-95 |
| Second half | 42 | 59 | Warriors +17 |
AP also records the final margin as the largest in the shot-clock era for a team that trailed by 20 or more at the end of the first quarter. The previous best was the Warriors' own 124-110 win over the Bulls on 4 March 1976 after trailing 41-18. In the fourth quarter Curry passed Dominique Wilkins (26,668 points) for 18th place on the NBA's all-time scoring list.
Which numbers explain the comeback?
The ESPN game page and box score carry the team totals. Three lines stand out.
| Statistic | Lakers | Warriors | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Three-pointers | 11 of 39 (28%) | 22 of 46 (48%) | 33 more points from deep for Golden State (our calc: 11 × 3) |
| Assists | 18 | 31 | Ball movement after the first quarter |
| Turnovers (total) | 22 | 17 | Ten Warriors turnovers came in the first quarter (AP) |
| Points off turnovers | 25 | 27 | Each side's points scored from the other's mistakes |
| Free throws | 18 of 24 | 14 of 17 | Lakers got to the line more |
The three-point gap is the whole story in one row: 22 made threes against 11 is a 33-point difference from that shot alone, nearly double the final 17-point margin. The Lakers actually scored more in the paint (36 to 28) and blocked more shots (11 to 5), but could not keep pace from outside.
Curry against Doncic, by efficiency
Raw points favour Doncic, 37 to 31. Efficiency favours Curry. Using the standard true-shooting formula, points divided by 2 × (field-goal attempts + 0.44 × free-throw attempts), Curry's 31 points on 23 shots and one free throw work out to about 66.1%, while Doncic's 37 points on 27 shots and eight free throws come to about 60.6% (our calculation from the ESPN box). Eight of Curry's 11 baskets were threes, so 24 of his 31 points (77%) came from beyond the arc. He also finished with six assists, a team-best plus-19 among starters, and only two turnovers; Austin Reaves had 21 points for the Lakers but eight turnovers.
- Brandin Podziemski: 21 points, six assists, five rebounds.
- De'Anthony Melton (bench): 16 points, 4 of 6 from three.
- Georges Niang (bench): 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting, plus-21 in 19 minutes.
- Walker Kessler (Lakers): 10 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks.
Reading plus-minus without being fooled by it
Plus-minus counts the score change while a player is on the floor, so it rewards being on court during a run rather than personal scoring. The box shows it clearly: Draymond Green scored only two points yet finished plus-17, while Doncic, the game's top scorer, was plus-9 even though his team lost by 17. Off the Warriors bench, Will Richard was plus-20 with three points. Treat the figure as context about lineups, not as a ranking of who played best; a single game's plus-minus is noisy, and it is one of the numbers most often over-read in post-game talk.
Discipline was a factor late. AP reports Doncic was given a technical foul with 21.8 seconds left in the third quarter, and Matisse Thybulle received one in the fourth; ESPN lists four Lakers technicals in total.
How did the result compare with the betting line?
The ESPN game page displays a pre-game line from DraftKings: Lakers favoured by 2.5 points, a total of 234.5 points, and moneylines of −148 on the Lakers and +124 on the Warriors. We quote it as published there, not as advice, and lines vary between books and over time. Converting those American odds into plain numbers is simple arithmetic (our calculation):
| Market | Posted | Result | Plain-number reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moneyline, Warriors | +124 | Won | Decimal 2.24: a ₱100 stake returns ₱224 including stake |
| Moneyline, Lakers | −148 | Lost | Decimal 1.68: ₱148 needed to win ₱100 |
| Spread | Lakers −2.5 | Warriors by 17 | Underdog covered by 19.5 points |
| Total points | 234.5 | 207 | Under by 27.5 points |
The implied probabilities in those two moneylines are about 59.7% for the Lakers and 44.6% for the Warriors. They add up to 104.3%, not 100%, and the extra 4.3 points is the bookmaker's margin built into the prices. Removing it pro rata leaves roughly 57% against 43% (our calculation). In other words, the market saw this as close to a coin flip with a slight Lakers lean; a 17-point Warriors win was far outside what the line expected, which is a reminder that one game says very little about whether a price was "right".

What does it mean for both teams?
The result evened the season series at 1-1; the Lakers had won the opener between the teams in Los Angeles a week earlier, according to AP. ESPN lists the Warriors at 3-3 and the Lakers at 4-2 after the game. Both play again on Sunday night US time (Monday morning in the Philippines): the Lakers host the Raptors and the Warriors host the Clippers, per AP.
Because this was an NBA Cup game, it also counts toward the in-season tournament's group stage as well as the regular-season standings. We do not project group tables here; the NBA publishes them on its own site as games are played.
What is not confirmed?
- Injuries and minutes plans for either team's next game were not part of the reports we read.
- The closing line. The odds above are the line ESPN displays; we did not verify the price at tip-off at any specific book.
- "Record" claims are AP's shot-clock-era research, quoted as AP stated them; we did not reproduce the historical search.
